Dan Levy, co-creator and star of Schitt’s Creek, loves fresh scents—especially if they’re imported from Japan, his go-to travel destination. He’s obsessed with the Diptyque Tokyo Candle, which he says makes for an especially thoughtful gift. But his all-time favorite aromas come from a series of matchstick incenses created by a company called Hibi. As Levy explains, the incenses have many uses: they’re helpful in the bathroom, the bedroom, or “to throw into a piece of luggage if you travel a lot.” In the latter situation, when you’re staying at an Airbnb “that’s really smelly, and you want to make it smell just as smelly—but good smelly—[this is] very worthwhile and affordable,” Levy notes.
But Hibi incenses truly shine (or, more accurately, smell) when you have friends over: “I often like to put them by the toilet in case of any kind of emergency,” Levy says. “Let the guests feel comfortable in times of need. It’s a delightful smell, and it lasts 10 minutes.” There is, no joke, nothing more hospitable than that.
You can purchase some Hibi matchstick incense of your own below. And while you’re here, check out Dan Levy’s complete list of his 10 essential items, which also includes a classic collection of Joan Didion essays, a notebook, an airplane disinfectant spray, bubble tea, and…his own dog. The dog, unlike the other items, is absolutely not for sale (but still essential).
